Knox of Pettigo, Co. Donegal
Lucinda Armstrong married William Knox in 1858
My great-great-grandmother was called Lucinda like me. She was born in 1830 in Carrickmcgrath, or (Carrickmcgra), County Donegal (near Stranorlar). Her maiden name was Armstrong. Her father was Oliver (or Olipher) but I could find no further information about him. I believe he was descended from the great Armstrong family of engineers from Cragside, Northumberland.
Lucinda married William Knox from Pettigo in 1858 in the church of Donaghmore, near Strabane in County Donegal. She then went to live at Drumawark, part of Pettigo. She is said to be buried at Carne Graveyard. I found the family grave but no mention of her on the tombstone. It is possible that by then burials had transferred to Templecarne as it was about then that the old graveyard was abandoned. I have been unable to find a record of her death.
During my recent trip to Pettigo I found several places where they may have lived. I also met a number of people who remembered the family.
Lucinda and William had several children, Fanny (my great grandmother), Eliza, and Mary.
The pictures show the family grave in Carne Graveyard, Pettigo, the view from the same graveyard, the church where Lucinda and William married in Donaghmore, Strabane, and a house probably built on the land where they lived in Carrickmcgrath.
